Dr. Tsai is interested in integrated and fiber optics, devices, and materials; integrated acousto-optics, integrated magneto-optics, and acoustic microscopy.

Dr. Tsai's current research activities focus on three areas: integrated photonics, magnetic film-based microwave devices, and MEMS-based Ultrasonic Atomizers.

In the area of integrated photonics (acousto-optics and integrated magneto-optics) he is concerned with guided-wave acousto-optic interactions and devices in viable ferro-electric and compound semiconducing materials, and guided wave magneto-optic interactions and devices in rare earth garnet-yittrium iron garnet (YIG).

Research in the area of magnetic film-based microwave devices is concerned with conception and realization of magnetically tunable wideband integrated microwave devices using YIG-gallium arsenide (GaAs) and iron (Fe)-GaAs layer structures. The resulting devices are aimed at potential applications in wideband optical/microwave communication and signal processing systems.

Work in the area of MEMS-based Ultrasonic Atomizers involves utilization of MEMS-based technology for construction of integrated ultrasonic atomizers (nozzles) for atomization and spray to produce micro- and nano-particles with potential applications in biomedicine, micro-electronics and materials processing
